SLAVERY
With absolutely no disrespect to the six million Jewish people (and lest we forget gypsies, homosexuals, those considered ‘mentally defective,’ the physically disabled and the 20,000 of my black brethren) who were murdered by the Nazis in the Holocaust (and I could not possibly be more insulting than the German Pope who last week stood at Auschwitz and did not offer an apology for the silence and possible complicity of Pope Pius XII during the Nazi years, but went on to pretty much absolve everybody except the “ring of criminals” he referred to of responsibility, indicating that it was the likes of himself and other Christians who were indeed the victims, what a top man) , the Transatlantic Slave Trade is quite simply the greatest crime ever committed against humanity (as well as being the largest forced migration in human history).
This is 2006 in the 21st century, yet its continuation and legacy are as widespread as ever.
This trade in dehumanisation, murder, rape, exploitation and misery (which forcibly removed millions of people from our African Motherland) is the reason why there are black people in the Caribbean. It is why people in Angola, Brazil. Mozambique and Cape Verde speak Portuguese, (from 1440 to1640 the Portuguese had a virtual monopoly on the export of slaves from Africa and transported around 4.5 million of my people, bless em), why people in Senegal (home of the infamous Goree Island where many of the first slaves were shipped from) and Cameroon speak French (and for those self same French to commit unspeakable atrocities in Algeria) and pretty much the rest of Africa was divided up by the British (who in the 18th century transported something akin to 6 million people, but as ever will now bang on about how they had a prime role in the abolition of this vile trade and yes as ever in anticipation of response I am acutely aware that many African kings and merchants were directly responsible for selling our own people into bondage, often in exchange for a weapons trade that continues to this day), The Dutch, Italians and the Belgians (whose King Leopold is directly responsible for one of history’s worst, but least talked about genocides in the Congo, although he never set foot in the place) for its colonial playground.
Queen Elizabeth 1st is acknowledged to be one of the greatest figures in British history, yet along with other prominent figures of the time backed the slave catching expeditions of John Hawkins, even lending him a ship on his second expedition after first expressing a hope that Africans would not be enslaved without first giving their free consent! Nice to know that the Virgin Queen (sounds like a train run by Richard Branson) didn’t allow her morals to slip, ditto that hero of the Spanish Armada, (the Spaniards pretty much decided to enslave most of South America) Francis Drake who embarked on a little people catching trip of his own in 1567-68.
I have figures here that say in excess of 11 million people (and let us remember these were flesh and blood human beings with families and histories, although often being made to lie flat with less than 50cm of vertical space you perhaps might just forget this) were imported between 1450 and 1900: I believe this to be a wholly conservative estimate, which minimises the true numbers involved.
In 108 years (1699-1807) British and British colonial ports mounted 12,103 slaving voyages: 3,351 from London, 2,105 from Bristol (who are weighing up whether to apologise for this slight blip in their past, but more on that later) and 5,199 from Liverpool (who have at least had the good grace to do just that in 1994).
Whilst in the US in 2002 I was somewhat alarmed to purchase a book called “By the color of our skin’ (and for once I haven’t been pulled up by the poxy American spell check) co-authored by the white Leonard Steinhorn and the black Barbara Diggs-Brown, which actually states that Britain had no part in the Transatlantic slave trade. As breathtakingly stupid as this might seem they did go on to debunk the myth of that nation of immigrants with it’s very short history built on slavery, the genocide of its indigenous people and now just the small matters of attempting to cause World War 3, whilst simultaneously decimating the environment being accepting of those it had (and if you walk less than one mile from the White House as I did, or even more pertinently check the behaviour of the likes of Colin Powell, grandson of slaves, ever ready to cover up massacres such as Mai Lai in the Vietnam war at his white masters bidding and that apologist for continuing murder and genocide, Condoleezza Rice, it still does) once enslaved.
Steinhorn and Diggs-Brown at least didn’t try to con us by pretending that George Washington didn’t own slaves or that the so-called Great Emancipator, Abe Lincoln was an abolitionist (his stance was merely politically expedient in his war with the British and the man himself was a racist) and as astounded as I was by their original claim they at least didn’t pretend that that signatory of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson was not only a slave owner, but more than likely a rapist (as so many were) who in all probability fathered several children by his slave Sally Hemmings. Some of those generous American planters estimated that a slave could be worked to death in four years, whilst in the British West Indies the average life expectancy was seven years. What a return on your investment eh!
To return to the term breathtakingly stupid having watched the pupils and staff at Virginia’s evangelical Christian Patrick Henry College who apparently provide more interns for the Casa Blanco than any other college (which explains quite a lot) I was not sure whether to laugh at their naivety, complete lack of individual semblance of thought owing to their brainwashing by a group of people who if they did not would such power and influence would surely be locked up for their own safety (joined by Ted Nugent, although I think other peoples safety is the issue in his case). One moron in particular actually in the same sentence spoke of being pro-life, equating it with the right to bear arms. Like their hypocritical President, these people really need to drink, take drugs and have pre-marital sex. One thing that has amazed me over the years is that the vast majority of those who advocate war (and to shoot somebody does not require any physical courage whatsoever as you don’t even have to be near them, even less so dropping bombs by computer co-ordinate, although allegedly those US masters of ‘friendly fire’ occasionally manage to hit the right target) such as draft dodging politicians and the likes of Jim Davidson and Jeremy Clarkson (what a man to threaten to run down cyclists and consider that the effects of global warming in the 3rd world are not worth a second thought) and so many more tend to have a complete lack of physical courage themselves, but are more than happy to advocate the deaths of many thousands of innocent people.
Those at PH college (who incidentally are home schooled, taught the bullshit that is creationism and pretty much denied access to television and papers in case like many of their fellow countrymen they should actually find out what is occurring in the real world, although this perhaps makes it easier for Americans to justify the atrocities committed in their name and incidentally it was in Virginia on Independence Day 2002 that I had to chin some redneck for racially abusing me) are a prime example of the billions around the world today who are subject to the biggest enslavement of all RELIGION!
Will someone please tell me where it says your god is ok to be a racist, homophobic, sexist, misogynist, intolerant, bigot with a sense of innate superiority over ones fellow man (and in religions such as Christianity and Islam especially, woman). Not only do I not believe in worshipping any so called deity or believing what it says in some so called holy book but from the dawn of time (and not the one that these jokers claim was done and dusted in 6 days, was he on price work?) have God, Jehovah, Jesus, Vishnu, Allah, Brahma, Yahweh, Haile Selassie (who pretty much sacrificed his people to the Italians), Ahura Mazda (a new make of car perchance) whoever it is that the fruitcake Tom Cruise worships and numerous others. Christianity (and how so many slaves in the US came to worship the same white male God that their masters prayed to and often used as their entire justification, confounds me completely) Islam and Judaism all state that there is only one God, who is omnipotent and a mixture of eternal, benevolent, fair, omniscient etc etc.
Surely the Koran, the Bible and the Torah can’t all be right? For me it gets more confusing because if the adjectives applied to the various deities are to be believed then surely a refusal to ordinate women priests or elect homosexual canons would be wrong as would failure to act on the Holocaust or knowledge of sexual abuse. The disgustingly named honour killings would surely enter these categories as would the subject matter, the Crusades, suicide bombings, the Hindu caste system, people trafficking, apartheid and the actions of the Israeli, Burmese, British, US, Chinese, East Timorese, Rwandan, Sudanese, Russian and so much more.
Perhaps I’m not really that smart because I thought that Catholics and Protestants were Christians so you would think that maybe Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams would be friends. Likewise Sunni and Shia Muslims (and very interesting to see how Muslims worldwide can demonstrate against allegedly offensive cartoons, but nary a protest about the genocide being wrought on fellow Muslims of the in Darfur) , Hasidic and Orthodox Jews and should the Brahmin and the Untouchable not break bread together? Maybe I can’t even read very well because I have been told countless times that it says something or other in the Bible (often with the chapter and verse) which when I have checked doesn’t seem to say what I was told at all. How do the likes of Henry Kissinger and Ariel Sharon reconcile their many war crimes with their Jewish faith? How do those Christians Blair and Bush sleep at night? Hindu, Sikh and Muslim have committed many atrocities against each other on the Indian sub-continent and how do you persuade young men (and I re-iterate what are female suicide bombers promised?) that blowing themselves up will see them go to paradise to meet 72 virgins? Is it truly justifiable to deny your child a life saving blood transfusion on the grounds of your religious faith? All major religions have been party to murder, genocide, slavery, oppression and more and the hypocrisy attached to this ultimate form of mind control leads me to conclude that “THANK GOD I’M AN ATHEIST”
Slavery (and its inherent justification of white racial supremacy) explains why war criminals and murderers like Winston Churchill are feted as heroes despite being directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of Kenyans interned and tortured in the most brutal manner when the Mau Mau attempted to defend their country against British occupation (to this day it allows so called British aristocracy such as Tom Cholmondeley, son of Lord Delamere to shoot black people whenever the mood takes him although on this occasion he might just get charged with murder). There is no earthly reason why the Mau Mau should have steered Churchill from his murderous path. After all he had already interred 20,000 Boers in concentration camps, aided and abetted British cartographers who took about the length of the school summer holidays to partition the Indian sub-continent, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths and approved the Black and Tans slaughtering the Irish population.
It is the raison d’etre behind those terrorists in the G8 (ably supported by their deliberate agricultural policies and Irish rock stars) being allowed to actually fool a large percentage of the world’s population (who really ought to know better) that they really want to make poverty history, whilst at the same time extending those policies with completely false facts and figures that continue to perpetuate the cycle of poverty, famine and premature death by preventable disease (and there is the means to completely eradicate diseases such as malaria and TB from the so patronisingly named developing world and to provide free basic healthcare for all) that they caused in the first place.
I have NEVER believed that it is merely coincidence that AIDS and the HIV virus are rife in Africa and whilst I accept that many ridiculous superstitions surrounding this dreadful disease (such as the belief that having sex with a virgin will cure you) and the refusal to acknowledge the extent or methods of contracting the disease by the likes of South African President Thabo Mbeki, allied to the (apparently soon to be reviewed) disgusting decision by the Catholic church to promote the use of condoms as evil (and let us not forget the US religious rights, hypocritical moralising abstinence programmes, which are of course directly linked to funding) and the often dominant macho culture of the continent are all an integral part of yet another malaise that is killing generations of Africans, the leader of the free world, which sees no dichotomy in imprisoning 14 year old children in Guantanomo Bay, torturing people in Abu Gharib and slaughtering more innocent Iraqi citizens in Haditha and Ishaqi can actually hold the developing world (I don’t know why this term continues to be used as most that is developed has long since been stolen or co-opted by the west) to ransom with its dominance of the global pharmaceutical market. It was less than a decade ago that an international outcry forced a climb down of the American patent holders of the AIDS retroviral drugs from some $15,000 dollars a year to $150 as they were (deliberately) far beyond the reach of those who needed them most.
It Really is a small world
There are an estimated 40 million Aids sufferers worldwide with 95% of these being in the developing world. As out cousins across the pond are so fond of saying “you do the math”.
Malaria claims in excess of one million lives a year, 90% of them children. You would think that this being the case, the whole world would be up in arms, especially considering that the combination therapy of choice can cost £1.30 a day for an adult, which so many still can’t afford. TB kills double that amount, yet there has been little or no research for the last 40 years.
In possibly the greatest global marketing exercise in history (Live 8) Madonna (who was happy to take millions to advertise Gap, whose sweatshop policies were under scrutiny for a long time, although they appear to have cleaned up their act of late stood with her arm around an Ethiopian famine survivor from the eighties. Also on that stage were the likes of McCartney, Robbie Williams, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Coldplay, Mariah Carey and Bono and many more white (although Mariah discovered she was black apparently a few years ago) multi-millionaires. Now look at the statistics at the end of the next paragraph. Ask yourself how much these people are worth and then ask yourself why none of them could make the philanthropic gesture to band together to actually eradicate some of the diseases mentioned, which many could afford singularly, let alone collectively. Not only would it have led by example but they probably could have claimed any donations back through tax. The likes of that clown Beckham or the disgusting Carey (whose pathetic riders are legendary in the music business and why does she continue to dress like a 16 year old ) negotiate millions for their image rights and yes they do hold the occasional expensive select party for charity, but their hypocrisy makes me sick. Likewise the many stars of stage, sport and screen who take money from the likes of Nike (especially the self-styled Cablinasian pillock Tiger Woods), McDonalds etc who are directly responsible through their employment policies and environmental destruction for much of the slavery that still exists.
Slavery gives carte blanche (the French may have been some of the worst abusers but are great for providing descriptive words) for the western world having literally raped most of the world of its resources to shut its doors on those from former colonies or fleeing repression (some countries even stoop so low as to release, by accident of course, swathes of foreign criminals, around local election time provoking the usual sensationalist headlines designed to engender the most basic, primeval racist fears amongst its population) although they are quite happy to allow truckloads of women (and the equivalent amount who are still classified as girls) to be kidnapped and trafficked here (some apparently auctioned on British airport concourses) for purposes of rape and sexual exploitation (although when those who prey on these hapless females are caught they very generously deport the girls back to from whence they came without having to give them any respite as after all they refused to sign the charter to protect these HUMAN BEINGS WHO JUST SO HAPPEN TO BEAR RESPONSIBILITY FOR GIVING LIFE in the first place)!!!
The legacy of slavery has enabled the likes of Elvis, The Beatles, the Stones, The Who, Clapton, Elton John, Eminem and others to become multi millionaires whilst the true pioneers of music such as Robert Johnson, Big Joe Turner, Paul Robeson, Mama Rae Thornton, Billie Holliday and so many others were abused, exploited, plagiarised and many ultimately died in poverty in a situation that is still being replicated today.
It has allowed the likes of Charles Shaar Murray, Frank Ellis, Nick Griffin, Robert Kilroy-Silk, Ron Atkinson, Dominic Lawson, Garry Bushell, Melanie Phillips, Margaret Thatcher, Norman Tebbitt, David Blunkett, Michael Howard, Trevor Kavanagh, Bruce Anderson, Keith Newbery, Charles Clarke, John Reid, Rupert Murdoch, Ken Bates, Barry Hearn, Bernard Manning and the Duke of Edinburgh to name but a few to denigrate, stereotype, abuse and ridicule Black, Asian and foreign people, yet like the Americans and Australians develop an almost total amnesia of the disgusting genocidal past of their countries histories and as in the case of the current British prime minister and American president continue to spout empty rhetoric regarding THEIR version of freedom and democracy whilst continuing to perpetrate atrocities far worse in many cases than the regimes they rail against.
Because of slavery the events of September 11th 2001 (and I still harbour many doubts regarding the veracity of this) can be used as an excuse to start potentially the most damaging war in history when these self same countries (literally) stood aside in Rwanda and Burundi in 1994 when 800,000 people were slaughtered in one month. They did the same as East Timor lost one third of its population, continue to do business with a Chinese regime that oppresses and murders its people (although I believe they sent the government a stern letter after Tiananmen Square) at home and has its tentacles in Burma and Nepal. Had the Balkans not only been so close to our doorstep and world opinion been so focused as some of the victims were relatively light skinned there would have been little or no intervention there. The tyrant Mugabe (who like Saddam and Bin Laden was once an ally and actually did take back land that Ian Smiths vile regime stole from its rightful black owners) is now vilified and condemned, but Mobutu and Banda’s murderous regimes were tolerated for years. Seems those brave Americans don’t quite have the bottle to face down the North Koreans either!
Again no disrespect to the victims of 9/11, but everything mentioned in this paragraph is far worse
Lest we forget the home of the brave has shown its true colours (again literally) with its reaction to and treatment of the black citizens of New York in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
In the 21st century thousands of desperate migrants from Africa are still being washed up (and that’s the lucky survivors) on the shores of the Canary Islands and Lampedusa, in the hope of a better life, many of countries that are oil and mineral rich, yet had their legacy stolen, often by the governments of the countries they attempt to reach.
Now with a final twist of the knife it appears that by the year 2100 182 million more of my brethren in sub-Saharan Africa are set to die because of the west’s failure (soon to be aided and abetted by China and possibly India) and refusal to address climate change, whilst the NHS continues to (often illegally) poach the medical workforce from countries such as Ghana.
On a personal note the repercussions of this most pernicious of society's evils allows those who you trusted, even looked up to as friends and have introduced to your son to abuse you racially for no other good reason than their own insecurities. It is always sad when people turn out to be not what you thought they were, but in this particular case it was completely without foundation and if the man had an issue with me, he knows where to find me and should have been man enough to confront me himself. There are many who have done this over the years, but not too many who have gotten away with this and this will be no exception.
Yet (and it is an ongoing debate) the likes of AC Grayling, professor of philosophy at Birbeck College, the University of London and even the man who would be king (or at least the next PM) state that apologising for the greatest crime against humanity would be a futile gesture or the oft repeated phrase from some of the pond life listed earlier that Britain has nothing to apologise for, The Empire was glorious (only for the British) and Britain has no need to apologise for its past etc. Graylings recent comments in the Independent are completely indicative of the arrogance that permitted all this in the first place as are his usual litany of excuses so I will set a precedent and apologise to him now for my reaction should our paths ever cross. I am deeply sorry that I was only mildly rude to Kilroy-Silk (who at the time I met him had not yet come out with his racist statements about The Irish, Arabs or asylum seekers). Nor had Ron Atkinson made his comments regarding Marcel Desailly when I sat a couple of tables away from this racist prick at the 10th anniversary of the kick Racism Out Of Football lunch!!! Keith Newbery (as with most cowards) declined to meet me when as we live in reasonable proximity had swapped correspondence I thought a frank exchange of opinions might be interesting. I re-iterate with the others mentioned in that paragraph I will apologise now for the way I will behave if we meet.
As for whether Britain should apologise, Grayling states that apology is an important thing when made by actual perpetrators of wrongs to their actual sufferers. Virtually everything I have mentioned IS slavery and its poisonous and continuing legacy in all but name.
SAY SORRY AND RIGHT YOUR WRONGS. IT IS THE VERY LEAST YOU CAN DO AND YES YOU CONTINUE TO OWE US.
PEACE.

PEACE.
