Pete Townshend vs. White Stripes


Yesterday's article from "Ireland.com" (quoted below and to be
found everywhere on the 'net) provokes some serious thought,
and......from different angles....a response........


1.- Yes, Townshend could "outdo" Jack & Meg with no percussion
of any form...what bother's me is seeing a musician of the stature
of Mr. Townshend even comparing himself to, or, for that matter,
the speaking of disparaging words against another artiste....I thought
that was for we fans to do......pit one artiste against another, you
know,
*ala* the 1965 debate of "The BeaTles vs. the rolling stones*" that me
and my peers used as a barometer to judge a person......or at least
the worthiness of their musical values........

But, I ask, why does Mr. Townshend feel compelled to judge himself
vs. The White Stripes at all?

Could it be that Mr. Townshend has, to this day, the remnants of a
complex that so drove him in his youth?

Does he fluctuate from feeling like a Rock God one moment
("...is it me, for a moment...for a moment... for a moment?")
[used w/o permission] and that awkward, quite simply,
quite pimply youth of 1966, still, to this very day?


2.- As far as The White Stripes credibility is concerned, allow
me to offer these two observations.......

a) :

Q- Who did Jeff Beck choose to back him in 2003 at the Royal
Festival Hall during a career spanning celebration over three
nights, on the Yardbirds' numbers?

A- The White Stripes !

Q- Why?

A- If you have to ask, you don't know Jeff Beck, or live in
a vacuum.....*everything* Jeff Beck does, works, however
quirky, even with the horrid production techniques of Nile
Rodgers in the mid-80s.

b) :

Jack White (for a view into the depth of Mr. White's musical
vocabulary, talent, and versatility, spin the soundtrack to the
film "Cold Mountain" and watch the film for a glimpse into
his modest, but potential filled acting skills) **chooses**
to have Meg White drum for him **because** of her raw,
naive, unskilled, untrained, primitive approach to drumming.

That resembles, dramatically so, the beloved drummer for
Mr. Townshend and friends from, say, 1964-1978, does it
not?

Do not confuse the pointing out of the similarities between the
two drummers (raw, naive, unskilled, untrained, primitive) to be
a comparison of the two, just that they each share similar
attributes in their musicianship, and do the job required,
rather well.


3.- Whether Mr. Townshend would be as much fun or as gorgeous
as The White Stripes is not within contention:

He wins....hands down!!!!!!

Townshend: I could outrock Stripes

He might be knocking on a bit (61 at the last count), but Pete Townshend
reckons he could still give rock duo The White Stripes a run for their
money.

Townshend, veteran star of the 60s band, The Who, told Relix magazine:
“I
could probably outdo the White Stripes with a guitar and a f****** drum
machine.”

But while he can play, can he still perform as well as The Who did, with
their stage-smashing antics of yesteryear?

He’s not so sure. “Whether I would ever be as much fun, or as gorgeous,
is
another story.”
